Founder Daniel Swygart scooped up £5,000 for his adventure-based social media app and will now get to discuss business ideas with Richard Branson over brunch.
TrekinHerd, an adventure based social media app, has been crowned the Cardiff winner of the Virgin Media Business Voom Pitch competition after beating five other companies from in and around Cardiff.
The innovative platform impressed the judges with its clear business proposition, which provides a social community for outdoor adventurers and backpackers on a global scale.
Using the app, would-be adventurers can blog about their experiences, connect with friends and family, meet other adventurers, and discover new places to visit.
A keen adventurer himself, Daniel has been travelling the world with his family since he was born.
After interrailing around Europe and working in the USA for three months, he realised there was a gap in the market for a platform which allows people to meet and interact whilst travelling.
Following the win, Daniel said: “The Voom competition is a real helping hand for start-ups like me. I made a last-minute decision to enter and I’m so glad I did.
“This investment will allow me to really kick-start the business, further developing the app into a more sophisticated tool.
“However, for me, it’s not just about the funds. It’s invaluable to gain experience at public speaking, something which I’ve not done much of.
“It’s also a great networking opportunity and I’ve met some really useful contacts through the event.”
Lord Mayor Cllr Bob Derbyshire, who was there to watch the competition, commented: “The Voom competition is such a fantastic platform for entrepreneurs all around the UK and I’m delighted that we were able to support it in some way on its Cardiff stop.
“There were some very inspirational business ideas but Daniel was a worthy winner and I wish him the best of luck with his venture.
“Cardiff is a brilliant place to start your business with a diverse mix of individual companies in the city.”
The Voom Tour is the first time that Voom Pitch, the UK and Ireland’s biggest business pitching competition, has hit the road in search of the best new business ideas.
It’s designed to help the brightest and the best companies to perfect their pitching ahead of the national competition in 2018.
Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group Founder, said: “The Voom Tour is seeking out brilliant entrepreneurs and ideas to help break down the barriers to business success.
“The aim is to help them put aside their fears and take the next steps on what could be the most significant journey of their business life.
“I’m looking forward to meeting the winner of the Cardiff Voom Pitch.”
