Meet the Buyer events are a great way to build your network and generate new business. Barry Harper-Smith, managing director of DMWR Architects, shares his experience of last year’s Stansted event.
Now in its 8th successful year, Stansted Meet the Buyer has firmly established itself as a key business even in the region, generating millions of pounds worth of sales by bringing buyers together with suppliers.
With a record-breaking 45 buyers meeting over 200 suppliers, last year’s event was the most successful yet, and the team behind it are keen to make this year’s event even bigger.
One of the success stories from 2017’s event was DMWR, an architectural design business with offices in Manchester and London that operates across the UK.
Barry Harper-Smith has been managing director at the firm since 2013 and believes events like this are a great chance to build links with other businesses across the region.
He said: “We are experts in the aviation sector and therefore felt that the Stansted Meet the Buyer event was a natural fit for us and a great opportunity to discuss opportunities with buyers in a face-to-face environment.
“We mainly attended with a view to developing new business, but it was also an excellent opportunity to raise our prominence.
“Having the opportunity to chat with such a captive audience would take ages to set-up ourselves, so events like this are invaluable.”
Launched in 1963, DMWR was founded by partners Douglas, Marriot, Worby and Robinson, and their first commission was the iconic 118m high Millbank Tower in London, which was the tallest building in the UK before the BT Tower was constructed a year later.
Now, over half a century later, the firm continues to seek out new business opportunities at events like Stansted Meet the Buyer, which provides an invaluable opportunity to meet with businesses that would otherwise not have been available.
“Events like this help to raise our profile and prominence among businesses across the region,” continues Barry. “It is also a great opportunity to speak to other experts who have experience in this niche sector, opening up new avenues and helping to generate new ideas.”
While they can be a bit daunting for the uninitiated, events like these provide a chance to meet dozens of potential new clients and partners in a short space of time.
“It’s a little bit like speed-dating,” jokes Barry. “You only have a restricted time with the buyers, so you need to make sure you’re organised and focused.
“It worked out well for us in the end. We have generated £50,000 worth of business so far as a direct result of the event, but there is still potentially lots more to come.”
This year’s Stansted Meet the Buyer event will be held on Thursday 1st November at the Raddison Blu London Stansted Airport Hotel.
London Stansted Meet the Buyers is organised and managed by BE Group and Kinetics on behalf of London Stansted Airport.
