World famous premium sweet brand Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls is celebrating the centenary of production at its Toffee Works with the company’s first major order for the U.S.
The $64,000 dollar deal to supply tins of Wildberry Gin, Rhubarb & Ginger Gin, Apple Cider and Dark Rum flavoured sweets shaped like the iconic Mint Balls, is with Cost Plus World Market, which has 257 speciality/import retail outlets across America.
The deal with the California-based company was completed after Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls attended The Summer Fancy Food Show, the largest specialty food industry event in North America, held in New York last month (June).
John Winnard, joint managing director of Wigan-based Uncle Joe’s, said: “Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls are known the world over and are popular as they’ve ever been in the UK.
“But we are now making a concerted effort to make them more easily accessible to people living outside Britain.
“It is great that our first major order for the U.S. has come while we are celebrating the centenary of The Toffee Works, where the sweets are still made to this day.”
Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls are made by William Santus and Co Ltd, a privately-owned traditional sweet company that was established in 1898 and the ownership has been passed down through the family generations.
The Mint Balls are still manufactured using the same traditional methods as when Mrs Santus originally made the sweets in her kitchen in 1898.
In April this year, HRH Prince Charles enjoyed a tour of the Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls factory in Wigan to celebrate the centenary of The Toffee Works.
He saw how the sweets were manufactured and met joint managing directors Antony Winnard and John Winnard MBE, the great, great nephews of the company’s founder, William Santus.
The completely natural “secret recipe” has been passed down through the family generations. Uncle Joe’s Mint Balls contain no artificial additives or colours, they are GM free, gluten free and are suitable for the vegetarian/vegan market.
