Work is expected to get underway on a £40m re-development of Newcastle-under-Lyme next year after ambitious transformation plans were approved.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council granted planning permission for the HDD Newcastle-under-Lyme Limited scheme – a joint venture between Henry Davidson Developments (HDD) and property regeneration specialist U+I.

The huge investment will regenerate the former Sainsbury’s site and the adjoining Civic Offices in Ryecroft and deliver an improved retail offer to the town centre as well as additional parking.
It will also include a residential element which will see over 500 student beds provided to support the ambitious growth plans of Keele University and further integrate the university campus with the heart of Newcastle.
The development is estimated to create 500 new on-site full-time equivalent jobs, with an additional 500 jobs generated during construction and a further 220 jobs being supported locally, as a result of the spending power of the new student residents.

Richard Croft, director at HDD, said: “The approval of the plans is great news for everyone, as it will bring a range of new facilities to Newcastle-under-Lyme.
“We hope to progress with the comprehensive redevelopment as soon as possible, and bring more vibrancy to the town centre.”
Simon Hesketh, director of regeneration at U+I said: “Our investment will complement existing facilities and provide a catalyst for the town centre to attract more big-name retailers, so local people can enjoy better shopping facilities closer to home.
“The proposals will provide a welcome boost to the local economy and that means local people will benefit from attractive new job opportunities in the town.”
It was set up in 1962 by town planner Professor Nathaniel Lichfield and is owned by its staff through an employee benefit trust. It has annual revenues of £20m and employs 215 people across its nationwide offices.
