Woking town centre’s new £500 million physical transformation, which includes apartments and a landmark retail centre, is taking shape and on track for phased completion in 2020.
Since demolition, initial groundworks and construction on the major Woking investment officially began last year, residents and visitors are now seeing a stunning new skyline rapidly develop as build work moves higher.
More than 330 construction staff are currently on site.
At 34 stories high, two iconic apartment towers and a new 23-storey Hilton Hotel are part of the town’s new Victoria Square development which includes 429 apartments and 125,000 sq. ft. of new commercial space.
Construction firm Sir Robert McAlpine is spearheading the major building project, which is part of a joint venture between Woking Borough Council and shopping centre owner and investor Moyallen Group.
Anchored by a new Marks & Spencer food and clothing store across 50,000 sq ft Victoria Square will also include a multi-storey car park, a medical centre and two public plazas and will open in September 2020.
The new 189-room flagship Hilton Hotel, which will include a new lobby bar, all-day dining restaurant, stylish Sky Bar, conference facilities and an on-site café, is on track to open on schedule in 2021.
Plans for the all-new Victoria Square retail, residential development and hotel, which were first proposed in 2012, play an integral role in Woking’s transformation.
Woking Borough Council leader David Bittleston said: “I’m delighted with the excellent progress being made in delivering this visionary and ambitious investment project.
“Not only will it provide a platform for further investment and opportunity, it is already strengthening Woking’s position as an exciting and compelling destination in which to live, work and invest.”
“Victoria Square will add a whole new level of vibrancy to the town and wider area and further stimulate the town’s economic vitality and future growth prospects.”
Paul Walker, project director, Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “It’s really exciting to see Victoria Square take shape and the various elements of this landmark construction project come together so well.
“We’re well on track, with a detailed plan, to transform Woking Town Centre and I look forward to overseeing further rapid progress towards the end of this year.”
Meanwhile, construction of a new £200 million ‘Woking Gateway’ project, adjacent and complementary to the Victoria Square scheme, remains on course to start in 2021.
The development proposal comprises 470 apartments in three additional high-rise towers next to the railway station in the town centre and which will add an additional 47,500 sq ft of commercial space.
A full planning application is currently being developed and it is anticipated that work will start in 2021 once approved.
Among the UK’s top 10 most desirable places to live and commute from, it takes around 24 minutes to reach Woking by train from central London.
It is also located only 15 kilometres from Heathrow and even less to major road networks and motorways.
