Deloitte’s BrightStart Higher Apprenticeship programme, which offers students an alternative path to university, has announced its latest intake of apprentices across Manchester following A-level results day.
The firm has appointed 12 new students to the programme at its Manchester office, who will make the jump straight into the world of professional services and start to earn while they continue to learn.
The programme offers students the chance to gain professional qualifications while being fully immersed in a job helping to solve some of Deloitte’s clients’ most challenging problems.
Steve Nuttall, partner at Deloitte in the North West, said: “Today is a significant day for hundreds of thousands of students, who now have a range of exciting options available to them in deciding what to do next.
“A Deloitte apprenticeship can be the first step in an exciting career, working on projects that have a real impact to our clients’ businesses. We are delighted to announce this latest intake of talented apprentices to our BrightStart programme, and look forward to helping them learn valuable skills and knowledge.”
Joe Silvester joined the BrightStart programme and currently works in Deloitte’s audit practice. He also acts as an advocate for the scheme and goes into schools and colleges to promote apprenticeships to young people.
Joe said: “After finishing my GCSE’s, I knew I wanted to work in finance, but wasn’t sure exactly where. The more I learnt, the more I realised that ‘accountant’ is an umbrella term to cover a wide range of areas, and to gain the necessary qualifications, you don’t need to go to university.
“In my experience, apprenticeships are still overlooked by many as inferior to the traditional university route, though that is slowly changing. Deloitte’s BrightStart programme has enabled me to get the finance background I wanted to launch my career, without paying large university fees.”
Deloitte is also launching Pathfinders, a new programme for gap year students, starting 9 September 2020. Twenty students will join Deloitte across the UK between school and university for a nine-month technology-based placement in Deloitte’s consulting or tax practice. They will have technology-focussed roles, either through working with technology clients or contributing to digital projects.
Steve adds: “Pathfinders is a new and exciting way of bringing talented students into Deloitte and fill the growing skills shortage in software development. We want to provide the opportunity for students to learn new, in-demand skills.
“We want to create a more diverse workforce, bringing strong representation of society into the workplace and a diversity of thought. We’re looking for people from a range of backgrounds and with different experiences.”
