Family bakery adds Lidl to its list

Family-run Tower Bakery has secured a distribution deal with supermarket giant Lidl to provide a range of six products to 90 Lidl stores across Scotland.

The Perth-based bakery, run by husband and wife Sandy and Angela McKinnon, along with their three children, will be supplying the supermarket with confectionary and bread products, which hit the supermarket’s shelves last week.

This deal is the latest in a string of high-profile contracts the company has won, already supplying Aldi, Co-op, Spar, and more recently ASDA and Tesco.

Co-founder and director of Tower Bakery, Angela McKinnon, said: “Our recent spate of contract wins has been great news for the development of the business.

“We have created 20 new jobs across the firm, including bakers and drivers.”

Angela attributes credit for much of the bakery’s expansion to her children, saying: “My husband Sandy looked after the day-to-day running of the bakery for 35 years, but when he suffered a stroke last year we got the children more involved.

“It’s because of their expert handling of the business that these contracts have been won.”

The company was able to expand its operational capacity after funding from Clydesdale bank, allowing for a six figure investment in new equipment.

Richard Smith, head of Clydesdale Bank’s Business and Private Banking Centre in Dundee, said: “It’s great to see a local business like Tower Bakery achieving its growth aspirations.

“The company had to grow very quickly to meet rapidly increasing demands.

“We are proud to have helped Angela and her family make the purchases necessary to meet their customers’ needs and plan for future expansion.“
