Cooper King Distillery will start production of its gin and open its doors to the public this spring, with whisky distillation following in the summer.
Having recently partnered with green energy specialists, Ecotricity, Cooper King is one of only three in England to be run solely on green energy.
The distillery will be England’s smallest and first self-built whisky and gin distillery, created by co-founders Chris Jaume, a chartered architect, and Dr Abbie Neilson, a former scientist.
The pair became enamoured with the craft whilst visiting Australia. They visited Tasmania’s eight operational whisky distilleries and saw the hand-crafted premium whisky industry first-hand, which was just starting to take off in this part of the world.
With a mission to bring their discoveries back to Britain, Chris and Abbie set up their own independent craft whisky and gin distillery back home in Yorkshire.
Commenting on being the UK’s newest green distillery, Cooper King Distillery co-founder Chris Jaume said: “We are extremely happy with our decision to run on 100% green energy.
“We are so passionate about ensuring that our actions have a positive impact on the environment and are taking every step we can to operate sustainably.
“It’s great that we are among a select few distilleries in the UK choosing to run solely on green energy; we hope that we can inspire more businesses to make a conscious effort to look at the impact they have on the environment.”
Following their passion to have a positive impact on the environment, the couple sought out an energy provider with the same values.
They sought out Ecotricity, a green energy company that holds the title as the greenest energy company in Britain, supplying 100% green electricity and frack-free gas to over 200,000 customers.
Cooper King Distillery also pledges to plant a tree for every Founders’ Club membership sold
Founder of Ecotricity, Dale Vince, commented: “Powering a business with green energy is the biggest single step that any business can take to cut the emissions that cause air pollution and climate change.
“Simply by choosing to use green energy, Cooper King Distillery will reduce the environmental impact of their own operations - while also supporting Britain’s energy independence and the green economy.”
Located in the heart of Yorkshire, Cooper King Distillery is a family-owned micro-distillery built on the site of a stable, featuring a shop and spirit tasting area.
Its initial batch of premium single malt whisky, made using Yorkshire barley, is scheduled to go into production in summer 2018, with a projected release date of 2023.
