Meet the MD: Allan Doyle, APS Scotland

Allan is an MD who has seen real growth happen right before his eyes. In his years at APS Scotland he's gone from leading a team of 3 to a team of ninety; and at one point 50 of them all arrived at once in a TUPE transfer! He talks to BQ about how what he does makes a difference, and how passionate he is about conversation.

Describe your role in no more than 100 words
I have the pleasure of leading a passionate and committed team of professional people who innovate, inspire and make more possible for clients in all aspects of creativity, marketing and communications.

What is it the company does?
APS Group is a marketing solutions and customer communications provider that brings brands to life across every channel, in every market, all with a local touch.

We streamline marketing and communication activities, improve processes and deliver cost savings through our creative approach, technology, sourcing skills and local insight. With over 700 employees across 25 sites worldwide, we serve customers in a range of markets including retail, financial services, travel, automotive, healthcare, leisure, pharmaceutical and the public sector.

What do you believe makes a great leader?
Great leaders are honest, passionate and surrounded by great teams.

What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?
About five years ago APS Group won a major Scottish Government contract. That involved a TUPE transfer of almost 50 staff and the re-development of our head office in Leith – all within three months! A huge challenge and, I’m very glad to say, a huge success.

How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?
I try hard to keep up with some of my favourite pastimes – singing, brass bands and the occasional hack through some of the world’s most beautiful countryside in the Scottish Borders where I live.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A train driver, of course! And when I was a bit older I did consider studying law.

Any pet hates in the workplace?
Please don’t send an email when you could have a conversation. Great teams and great results come from great conversations. Not a dozen emails…

Where do you see the company in five years time?
APS has transformed from a print company to an organisation which fully supports all aspects of marketing and communications from creativity to delivery. We support some of the world’s major brands and even governments. In five years’ time we’ll still be working with those leading brands and organisations to help them make even more possible… but the channels we’ll be using to deliver their messaging probably haven’t been invented yet!

What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?
Be true to yourself and who you are, work with great people and follow your passions!

Working on student publications at the University of Aberdeen

Give us a brief timeline of your career so far
After graduating in accountancy and economics from Aberdeen, I worked in the University for almost three years before moving into print and local newspapers with a small group based in East Lothian. I left there eleven years ago to join APS Group. At that time there were three people in the Scottish office. I now lead a team of 90 in Scotland.
