BQ catches up with Shaun Oakes, MD of ievo who are featuring in the Venturefest NE Innovation Showcase next month. ievo is a company with innovation etched through it's very core, specialising in the field of biometrics and security - or 'really fancy door locks', if you prefer!
Describe your business in no more than 100 words
ievo is a leading designer and manufacturer of one of the highest quality biometric readers in the world. Providing an advanced security element to access control systems, ievo products are industry leading in terms of technology and functionality and can be applied in any industry with security requirements. With a strong sales focus behind them, ievo is expanding its reach into global markets as well as focusing on UK and European trade.
What prompted you to enter the innovation showcase?
At ievo we are incredibly proud of our achievements and innovations in the security industry and wish to showcase these efforts to not only demonstrate the devices, but also to educate about why these products are important. Biometrics is still a relatively new technology, with many people not really knowing too much about the capabilities or the advantages it can offer. We wish to highlight how biometrics is changing the shape of the security and how it can be applied to any industry.
Describe the innovation that you’ve entered the showcase with
ievo is a leading designer and manufacturer of one of the highest quality biometric readers in the world.
Stemming from years of in-depth research and expertise, ievo produce and create industry leading biometric readers that can be integrated into existing security access control systems.
Currently producing two variations of fingerprint readers, the ievo Ultimate™ (exterior and interior use) and Micro™ (interior use only) both of which are fully customizable up to and after the point of order, and also are fully serviceable.
Using an advanced algorithm and multispectral imaging to enable a level of unrivalled reliability of accuracy, and the ability to function in a variety of harsh environments, ievo readers provide a simple and effective security solution to support any access control system.
How would you describe that innovation to your grandma?
We make really fancy and futuristic door locks!
How do you encourage innovation in the workplace?
Being led by an entrepreneur whose innovation is the beating heart of the company, innovation from all staff is encourage. We tackle problems and create solutions as a team and all inspirations ideas, suggestions and concepts are welcome to be explored together.
What are the biggest challenges you face when trying to innovate in your business?
Being ahead of the game is challenging. Technology moves at such a rapid pace and maintaining your lead over competitor can be tricky.
And how is business going for you at the minute?
Business is going great, we are in the mist of introducing the latest generation of our devices, which sees not only an aesthetic change, but also some improvements to its internal design and functionality. We are also in talks with new installers and distributors which will not only broaden our client industry range but also our global export market.
Where do you see your company in five years time?
Maintaining our lead as the no.1 fingerprint reader designer and manufacturer, and introducing some new innovations to the security industry to push us ahead in terms of what ievo can offer its clients.
What advice would you give to aspiring innovators?
Research is vital, and having a strong network of companies and people will always help. Get out to expos and events based on your area of interest – the difference between having a standard product and an industry leading one can be a chance meeting or finding that key ingredient in an unexpected place.
