Social enterprise Co-wheels car club goes electric

Birmingham drivers can now ‘unplug and go’ with the arrival of Co-wheels Birmingham’s first fully electric car.

Launched by Stirchley entrepreneur Sandra Green, the Birmingham based social enterprise has grown from just one car (Sandra’s own) to seven in just two years. Co-wheels Birmingham now has over 70 members, with pay-as-you-go vehicles currently located in Stirchley, King’s Heath, Cotteridge Park and Bournville – with more cars and locations across the city coming soon.

Available for immediate hire, the community car club’s new Nissan LEAF is now plugged in at The Bournville Community Hub and costs just £5.25 per hour to hire. This will be Birmingham's first shared electric vehicle.

Sandra Green, director of Co-wheels Birmingham, commented: “As a social enterprise, we’re committed to helping our members save money, reduce car ownership and create a cleaner environment for our city, so we’re thrilled to add our first fully electric vehicle to our ever-growing fleet.

“Fun to drive, affordable, smooth and silent, our electric car is ideal for those not only looking to unburden themselves from the expense of car ownership but also wanting to drive with a clean conscience. Simply unplug and go!”

Members of Co-wheels Birmingham can drive low-emission, well-maintained cars without the hassle and cost of owning, insuring and maintaining their own car. Customers pay a one-off membership fee and then pay-as-you-go from just £4.50 per hour.
