Gateshead engineering firm lands £1m train deal

A Gateshead manufacturer of battery components has won a £1m contract with a leading stock leasing firm.

The deal will see Turbo Power Systems (TPS) manufacture bespoke battery chargers for Porterbrook’s Class 170 “Turbostar” trains.

The trains are leased to a number of major train operators across the UK including Abellio ScotRail, First Trans Pennine, Chiltern Railways and Hull Trains.

The contract is another example of North East businesses benefiting from the Northern Powerhouse strategy which aims to implement a world class rail network with better business connections between Northern cities and regions.

Carlos Neves, TPS chief executive officer, said: “We are absolutely delighted that we have won this contract.

“We hope our innovation will complement the government’s vision for an improved train service offering; due to the high reliability of the power that the battery chargers provide and therefore minimal downtime.”

TPS is a bespoke design house for high speed electrical machines and power electronics products, and provides turnkey services for transportation, defence, industrial and energy sectors.

The company has exported its products as far as Toronto, Sao Paulo, Chicago and Kuala Lumpur as well as across the UK.
