Meet the MD: Maureen Wright of Westray Recruitment Consultants

As managing director of Westray Recruitment Consultants Maureen Wright helps people find their ideal careers alongside her team of highly trained consultants, mixing modern technology with 'old school' methods. She caught up with BQ to tell us more...

Describe your role in no more than 100 words

I make sure that we provide a first class recruitment service that delivers measurable results, to the broad range of clients that we partner with. I make sure that our Consultants are expertly trained and that we utilise the right blend of technology based solutions, alongside effective “old school” hiring strategies and techniques, in order to source the best talent possible.


What is it the company does?

We partner with a broad range of businesses from niche market sectors, to provide added value recruitment solutions that work. Whether the requirement is for a high volume flexible workforce, a key business critical appointment on a permanent or interim basis, or a full project team, we have the team with the skills and expertise that can uncover the talent required.


Give us a brief timeline of your career so far- where did you start, how did you move on?

I started my recruitment career in Birmingham in the early 80’s, when I walked into an employment agency (as they were called then) looking for a change of career. After a chat with the recruitment consultant that interviewed me, she asked me if I would be interested in a role within the business, I started with the company a week later and the rest as they say is history! Over the next 9 years I worked with both independent and national recruiters, working my way up through the ranks to secure Director level roles, before moving back to the North East in 1990 to establish my own business. 25 years later I’m very pleased to say the business has evolved and we are still here.


What do you believe makes a great leader?

Having the ability to assemble a great team of people to help you realise your business goals and aspirations and communicating the vision to them and rewarding them for their efforts. Empowering the team to realise their own individual ambitions and supporting them should they encounter setbacks – it happens. Also learning to trust your instinct.


What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

Ensuring we provide a value added service to our clients in what is a very competitive industry and one that sets us apart from our competitors. I think we have managed to achieve this


How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?

I work out at the gym on a regular basis and I enjoy walking my dog, a very big Lurcher called Howard – running after him definitely keeps me fit!


When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

A Vet. However, my father convinced me I would not deal well with the sad aspects of the job and he was probably right.


Any pet hates in the workplace? What do you do about them?

The negative opinion that people have about the recruitment industry. Sometimes the bad press is deserved due to the unscrupulous practises undertaken by some, but here at Westray we work hard to raise the standards in recruitment, so please don’t tar us all with the same brush – some of us do actually do a great job. As demonstration to our commitment to raising standards, Westray Recruitment are the only Consultancy in our region to have been awarded REC Audited Status.


Where do you see the company in five years time?

As always we will be focussing on continuous improvement and increasing the range of services we provide as well as our geographical reach. I would hope that we would be one of the first ports of call for any business that is looking to partner with an innovative and committed team of recruitment professionals.


What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

Be honest with everyone with whom you come into contact - professional integrity is vital. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to take risks and always deliver exceptional customer service.
