There can’t be any of us who haven’t had to deal with a ‘false alarm’ in our lives. Personally frustrating and commercially expensive, GJD are taking their V-TECT solution to Venturefest Manchester’s Innovation Showcase. MD Mark Tibbenham explains.
Describe your business in brief…
GJD is a leading UK manufacturer, designer and supplier of professional external detection and security equipment, as well as Infra-Red and White-Light LED Illuminators.
GJD’s perimeter security solutions rapidly identify and validate genuine alerts, whilst optimising the callout of responders, making GJD products truly valuable assets to both people and properties worldwide.
What prompted you to enter the Innovation Showcase competition? Describe the innovation that you’ve entered the showcase with.
GJD entered the Innovation Showcase competition as it is a unique opportunity to present our Company and our products. It is also a fantastic opportunity to network with investors and other businesses in Greater Manchester.
The product that we have entered is our ground breaking V-TECT® external motion detector. V-TECT®is an innovative security product designed to tackle false alarms: one of the major challenges in the security industry.
Security detection false alarms are the bane of most remote monitoring centres, as each alarm incident must be viewed and verified before a response can be initiated.
GJD’s new V-TECT® integrates traditional passive infrared (PIR) sensing technology with on board or ‘on the edge’ video analytics (VA). When the PIR is triggered by movement it asks the camera and VA software to confirm the presence of a human being, rather than an animal, foliage, blowing rubbish, etc and so help to achieve a zero false alarm rate.
V-TECT® will prove that combining video analytics with conventional PIR sensing is the perfect solution to challenge existing security issues, whilst offering an innovative alternative to currently available security detection and surveillance equipment.
The positive impact to the security industry from such a reliable zero-false-alarm detector is unprecedented. It will save money by reducing the hours and resource costs spent analysing and attending to false alarm reports. Ultimately, V-TECT® will make homes and places of work more secure.
How would you describe that to a novice?
To 100% reliably detect people!
What are the biggest challenges you face?
Varying and extreme weather conditions as this could potentially provide false alarms. Raising the funds needed to launch the new product to a global audience and so capitalise on its commercial advantages.
What are your biggest professional achievements to date?
GJD were recognised for the Detektor International Awards 2015. The Detektor International Award is designed to reward and encourage research and development within the security technology field. GJD received the award in the category of 'Alarm and Detection on Products Highly Commended' for its product the 'D-TECT 2 IP', external motion detector.
We are very pleased to have received this award as it is confirmation and recognition that the D-TECT 2 IP meets the criteria of outstanding innovations and contributes to the advancement of the security industry. GJD proudly accepted the award at the 16th Detektor International Awards Ceremony at the Sectech, Security Exhibition and Conference, Stockholm, Sweden.
GJD were also recognised at the Rochdale Business Awards 2014. The Borough of Rochdale awards celebrate the achievements of businesses and business people within Rochdale Borough. It was a huge honour for GJD to accept this award, it is a well-deserved recognition to all the team at GJD for their continuous hard work and dedication to the company.
GJD received the Security Industry Innovation award at IFSEC in 2006. GJD won the 'Best New Intruder Alarm Product.' The award was supported by the British Security Industry Association.
How do you feel about presenting to potentially hundreds of people at Venturefest Manchester?
I am looking forward to presenting, although I’m sure the nerves will hit on the day! The last time I did such a wide-ranging presentation was to introduce Astronaut Marsha Ivins to an electronics symposium audience!
What would winning the Innovation Showcase mean to your business?
GJD has been providing security solutions for over 33 years. We are proud of everything we have achieved and the accolades and awards that we have collected along the way. Being recognised as the Innovation Showcase winner will be the ‘cherry on the cake’ and undoubtedly help raise our profile, demonstrate our professional credentials and enhance our industry position and status.
The increased sales emanating from V-TECT® on the back of winning the award will also create more production jobs, as well as give everyone in our team a sense of enormous pride as well as provide the sales team with something great to talk about to new and existing customers.
Where do you see your company in five years time?
We strive to be World Class in everything we do. Quality products combined with exceptional customer service will set us apart from our rivals. We would like to be recognised as the world’s best manufacturer of external detector equipment and LED illuminators. We will have significantly expanded by at least doubling turnover and profits; with significant investments in R&D. Innovative technology arising from our engineering team will establish us as leaders in our field.
We plan to have a small office and warehouse in the USA and a second dedicated Export Sales Manager to steer our USA growth strategy.
What advice would you give to aspiring innovators?
Invest in up-front qualified and detailed market research. Spend time with your customers and end-users to ensure that you clearly understand their needs and requirements. By doing so you will save a lot of design time.
Making a product that meets a market need and at the same time is innovative can really give enormous competitive advantages and rewards. The time spent upfront can prevent flawed or novel designs that don’t really serve any practical purpose and so will never succeed commercially. Trust in and look after your staff…they are your main assets.
Believe in and don’t give up on your ideas.
