Innovation Showcase: Mymanu

Innovation Showcase: Mymanu

Smartphone fans would be forgiven for thinking that wireless earbuds were a brand new thing. But Mymanu’s CLIK earbuds have already evolved the concept, allowing for real-time voice translation. MD Danny Manu explains to BQ why they’re taking their kickstarter-achieving concept to Venturefest Manchester’s Innovation Showcase.

Describe your business in no more than 100 words

Mymanu is an innovative designer and manufacturer of consumer audio electronics and software to improve people’s lives. We've taken our commitment and our passion for innovation, music and technology and implemented them to develop unique sound solutions and applications. Here at Mymanu® we strive to maintain an exceptionally strong commitment to research, for it is within the discipline of research that yesterday's fiction becomes tomorrow's reality

What prompted you to enter the Innovation Showcase competition? Describe the innovation that you’ve entered the showcase with.

Mymanu® entered the showcase competition to gain support and advice to enable us to grow, as well as the opportunity to showcase our innovative product, Mymanu CLIK.

With today’s technological advancement, we are now at a great position to develop and design the world’s smartest and truly wireless earphones that can effectively be implemented into a modern consumer lifestyle.

Creating the hardware and the software together, we have implemented vocal translation for the first time in the history of true wireless earphones. This allows users to communicate with each other in different languages.  We believe this is one of the most remarkable achievements of the CLIK earphone yet.

We invented other input technology which enables the earphone to detect a touch, swipe and a press which produces instant access to a whole range of contextual specified controls to enable you to customize them to your preference.

We crafted a stunning unlimited homogenous LED light, which can be personalized to almost every activity and notifications that arrive on your phone.

You can set individual personalized colours, for a text or a call from those that matter to you the most. You don’t need to check your phone to know who it is. It provides a platform in which users can develop their own usability.

Using supersonic multimode microphones, the CLIK delivers a crystal clear audio quality with noise cancellation and audio pass through technology.

The development of the CLIK started years ago, engineering all the underlying technologies needed to make the CLIK conceivable.

With advancement in wireless innovation, we have also added a wireless charging case which can also charge your smart phone for even greater flexibility.

How would you describe that to a novice?

Mymanu CLIK is the world’s smartest first truly wireless earbuds with live voice translation. As well as performing all the regular functions of earbuds – playing music, and even picking up incoming calls from a connected smartphone – they have ability to translate languages in real-time, delivering the translated text right to your ears.

It comes with a multitude of additional features. They can wirelessly sync with a smartphone to deliver notifications and incoming calls directly to the ears of the user. For example, intuitive gestures make it easy for users to carry out actions such as skipping to the next track, accepting a call or checking recent notifications.

What are the biggest challenges you face?

As with all technology manufacturing start-ups, there are a number of risks and challenges. Finance, finding the right team and creating awareness of our innovative product in a very competitive market, were some of the biggest challenges.

To enable us to squeeze all the components into a tiny space in the ear in the CLIK development, we had to redesign every possible component needed to create this product.

What are your biggest professional achievements to date?

Once we’d completed our first prototype, we were thrilled to be selected for the TNW Boost Programme, as an innovative start-up.

We had the opportunity to present Mymanu CLIK at the TNW Europe conference in Amsterdam, which also saw the firm rise into the Top 20 Tech Start-ups in Europe.

Mymanu also has multiple award nominations, products in over 120 B&Q stores in England and a new office in the United States.

How do you feel about presenting to potentially hundreds of people at Venturefest Manchester?

I’m excited, and looking forward to introducing Mymanu and our innovative product to the Venturefest community. It’s also a great opportunity for us to meet and possibly collaborate with other businesses.

What would winning the Innovation Showcase mean to your business?

Winning the innovation showcase would be a great source of credibility for us, our partners, clients and fans. It would also be a big motivator internally, making the whole team proud to be part of the business. It would help provide us with the knowledge and exposure we lack to expand Mymanu globally.

Where do you see your company in five years time?

In five years time we want to contribute to about 7% of the consumer electronics market, increase our export activities and introduce more innovative products to support people’s lives.

What advice would you give to aspiring innovators?

Start-ups aren't easy to handle and things can get really tough, so:

  • Work on something that truly interests you.
  • Create a product or business that you believe and have a strong passion in, to the point where you're willing to take on a personal risk.
  • Learn from your mistakes and don't repeat them. EVER!
  • Don't hurry and don’t trust too easily.
