Renovos will be showcasing their innovative clay-gel technology used to aid the healing process of bone fractures at Venturefest South next month. We caught up with them to find out more about how it all works...
Describe your business in no more than 100 words
Renovos is a new venture capitalising on the decades of world-class orthopaedic research from the University of Southampton. We will apply this knowledge to offer the wider orthopaedic research community new tools to generate the next generation of medicines, combating the global ageing population. Serving universities, biotech and pharma, these tools will include high-value human stem cells (unavailable elsewhere), disruptive new assay platforms and a rapid and high-throughput service to screen new drug compounds. In addition, we are developing a proprietary drug delivery technology based on synthetic clay-gels which has the potential to revolutionise bone healing in affected patients.
What prompted you to enter the Innovation Zone? Describe the innovation that you’ve entered with.
We wanted to showcase our innovations and attract potential investors. Our clay-gel delivery technology combines potent biological agents in a one-step, chemical-free procedure, offering proven localised delivery of those agents, resulting in step-changes in safety and efficacy against the competition. This will mean patients are treated more easily, cost-effectively and safely. Initially, we are targeting our innovation to the healing of bone fractures.
How would you describe that to a novice?
Our clay-gel drug delivery technology can be injected to the site of a bone fracture to accelerate the healing process. It does this through a controlled and focused release of a range of agents that help the bone to heal. The innovation of the clay-gel delivery technology is the way it combines powerful biological agents with the clay in a proprietary, one-step procedure, without the need for complex chemical or physical methods. Because the clay-gel has controlled and focused release of the agents it offers a step-change in the safety and effectiveness of these agents compared to the current competition, which means patients will be treated more easily, cost-effectively and safely.
What are the biggest challenges you face?
As with any start-up acquiring the necessary investment to support the setup of our company is likely our biggest challenge. After this, there will be technical challenges however we are already leveraging the decades of experience and expertise of the founders as well as engagement with national experts in regulatory affairs and health economics to de-risk the development pathway of our clay-gel therapeutic technology.
What are your biggest professional achievements to date?
Beyond the world-leading research of the founders, the Renovos team acquired financial help and support from SetSquared and the University of Southampton Science Park’s Catalyst business incubators to develop their ideas into attractive value propositions and determine the market potential for the offered technologies.
How do you feel about showcasing to potentially hundreds of people at Venturefest South?
We are excited to be able to showcase at the Venturefest South event and we are looking forward to interacting with all the attendees and introduce our innovations.
What are you hoping to get out of attending Venturefest South?
Exposure to investors and local entrepreneurs.
Where do you see your company in five years time?
We see Renovos as a fast-growing company offering a portfolio of tools for the orthopaedic research community, with pre-clinical work completed on our novel clay-gel therapeutic and a first-in-man clinical trial underway.
What advice would you give to aspiring innovators?
We would advise to not be scared of getting the ideas out of the lab and to take the associated risks, as you will definitely enjoy the challenge and appreciate the continuous need for innovating to find your own space.
