Pickering’s Gin expands distillery as overseas demand soars

Edinburgh-based Pickering’s Gin has expanded its distillery just two years since its launch to cater for increasing demand from overseas.

The expansion has seen the company double its output capacity by installing a second still after landing two major distribution deals in Australia and New Zealand.

After visiting the countries at the end of last year, founders Marcus Pickering and Matt Gammell identified and explored the marketplaces to gain a greater understanding of the market conditions.

Pickering said: “We are thrilled that we are exporting Pickering’s Gin to some of the key global gin markets and are delighted that we can add Australia and New Zealand to our list of export countries.

“It is testament to the quality of our products that there has been such an interest and demand for our premium gins globally.

“With the markets that we have visited, a very important part of the trip is speaking to and seeing the best bars, hotels and trade outlets in the country.

“Getting them to taste our product is hugely beneficial and a major part of our trip.”

The first shipments have already been exported and are due to arrive just in time for the arrival of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in February, which the firm is an official sponsor of.

Pickering’s now export to Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, New Zealand.

The next market on the horizon is the USA; as Gammell added: “We have got some really great plans for some specific regions in the USA, so 2016 is already looking like a very exciting year for us.”

Pickering’s Gin was launched in March of 2014, and was the first exclusive gin distillery in the capital for over 150 years.

This small batch premium gin is distilled, bottled, labelled and sold at Summerhall Distillery.
