Iberia Madrid service launches at Birmingham Airport

A new route from Iberia Express which will open up new business opportunities has been launched from Birmingham Airport to Madrid, with connections to more than 30 destinations across Spain, Portugal, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

Iberia Express will operate the return flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

The direct services will help connect business travellers to some of the world’s most emerging markets, as well as increasing opportunity for further business across Spain.

Spain is the fifth largest economy in the European Union (EU) and now one of the fastest growing in the eurozone.

With automotive and aerospace goods being two of the UK’s most popular exported products to Spain, the link will provide a huge boost to the region’s fledging manufacturing sector.

In 2015, businesses in the West Midlands region exported £972.2 million of goods to Spain – an increase of £278.2 million from the previous year.

In 2013, exported goods from the region totalled £693.5 million. Of all the exports last year, machinery and transport equipment accounted for the bulk, with £498.9 million of sales, while miscellaneous manufactured goods achieved £264.6 million worth of sales – up from £60.4 million in 2014.

Welcoming Iberia Express as it landed at Birmingham Airport was Paul Kehoe, the Airport’s chief executive.

He said: “Not only is this great news as it increases capacity to Madrid, but Iberia Express is also a oneworld alliance airline and BA codeshare carrier, giving travellers enormous benefits.

“This is our 11th new airline to recently launch so we’re delighted that Iberia Express has also recognised the extensive business and leisure market in our region, and we welcome the strong Iberia brand to our growing network of airlines.”

Chris Hamilton, interim director of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) West Midlands said:“With exports to Spain from the West Midlands region growing significantly over the past few years, it’s excellent news that our local businesses now have a new carrier to fly direct to Madrid from Birmingham International Airport – and that their business contacts can also reach our region more easily and conveniently.

"Routes to cities such as Madrid are incredibly important if we are to encourage more businesses to trade overseas.”
