Paul Joseph is the co-founder of Health and Fitness Travel, a luxury wellness travel company specialising in creating holidays for those pursuing health and wellness. Paul manages the day-to-day running of the business, as well as pushing its overseas expansion. He caught up with BQ to tell us more...

Describe your role in no more than 100 words.

My primary role is overseeing the day to day running of our business including product development, PR, marketing, sales, recruitment and managing our team. One of my other roles is to expand our brand internationally; we opened up our first overseas office in Australia 2 years ago.

What is it the company does?

Established in London, Health and Fitness Travel is a luxury wellness travel company specialising in creating exceptional healthy holidays around the world that enhance and change lives.

Our team of Wellness Travel Specialists offer superior knowledge of worldwide luxury wellness holidays from fitness, spa and detox retreats, to yoga, weight loss and active holidays. We create trend-setting, cutting edge holidays with exclusive health and fitness programmes and added value packages.

Give us a brief timeline of your career so far – where did you start, how did you move on?

I worked in journalism and the PR and Marketing industry for wellness clients.

I also worked on national media campaigns for brands including Kleenex and Andrex, and promoted the benefits of acupuncture and nutritional supplements to key influencers. I’ve always had a passion for health and fitness along with an entrepreneurial spirit.

What do you believe makes a great leader?

Someone with great vision who inspires others and is confident, focussed and passionate about what they do. A great leader should have the ability to seek opportunities and take calculated risks with a strong team behind them. Have a good strategy and guide your team to be successful as multiple minds working together arrive at the best results.

What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

My biggest challenge has been to grow our company internationally and become less ‘hands-on’ as I hand down certain roles to my team, whilst making sure that the same level of service and work is continued, as we continue to grow our business.

How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?

Yoga helps me tune out and I’ve been practising now since 2002. I also do high intensity workouts such as boxing which helps me pound out that stressful energy and directing my mental focus away from work. I also take regular wellness breaks to unplug and make sure Sundays are regular technology free days.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to work in the travel industry, originally as a Pilot. I used to get so excited whenever my parents took me on holiday. I also loved sports and wanted to be a sports star that travelled the world.

Any pet hates in the workplace?

Meetings about meetings, poor attention to detail and bad customer service.

Where do you see the company in five years’ time?

Continuing to grow in the UK and internationally, whilst always remaining the leaders in wellness travel. Our recent new office move will also allow us to expand our team.

What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

Always work in an industry you’re passionate about. Build a great team, believe in your ability and inspire others to follow you. Listen to people around you and make notes, it’s amazing what you can learn from others. Life’s a journey, be prepared to make mistakes but learn from them. Never give up and set yourself new challenges.
