Around the world in 80 trades: Andrew Street of Liberty Drums

County Durham drum store Liberty Drums is an award winning drum kit retailer who has been exporting for 8 years. Founder Andrew Street caught up with BQ to tell us about his exporting adventure....

Liberty Drums is an award winning drum company based in County Durham. Launched in 2006 when founder Andrew Street decided to turn his hobby into a career the firm makes drum kits and snare drums for artists and retailers around the world, boasting accolades such as being awarded the “best wooden snare drum makers in the word” by the UK’s largest drum magazine, Rhythm.

Liberty Drum now exports to the USA, France, Denmark, Germany, Portugal and India.

Before starting the business, Andrew worked as an IT network design specialist, only fitting in his love of drums on an evening, however after taking a leap of faith the drum company began to hold its own and now resides in a 2000 sq ft factory which is looking to expand and grow its workforce.

The firm has now been exporting for the past 8 years, with its reach growing on a yearly basis.

“We are exporting drum kits and snare drums mainly to the USA but do supply to European destinations also,” said founder Andrew.

“Since the dawn of social media and growing number of endorsers of the brand abroad created a demand for our british made drums. This really gave us a drive to focus on export and also seek assistance and help with UKTI who helped us with overseas trade shows and provided some solid advice.”

For Andrew, the easiest part of exporting is packaging the goods, but he warns that there are some challenges too.

“The admin and operating efficiently with overseas customs processes and procedures to get goods to the destination without delay and not damaged.”

If he was to give any advice to new exporters, Andrew suggests: “Get plugged into local export helps such as UKTI. These types of helps are there to help connect and introduce you to your targeted market and buyers.”

Looking to the future, Liberty Drums hopes to expand into India, China, Canada and Africa. “In 5 years we will be the worlds most sought after drum brand and exporting to all major countries with an ever increasing workforce in the UK and overseas,” added Andrew.
