The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd is Glasgow’s only single malt distillery, making and exporting premium spirits and malt whisky. BQ caught up with CEO Liam Hughes to hear about the challenges of exporting, and what difference it has made to his business.
Exporting is a huge part of daily business for the distillery, Liam Hughes said: “Glasgow Distillery Company has been exporting for around two years. Our business is heavily geared to export, so we started exporting within the first 6 months of starting the business.
“Our largest exports are our Makar Glasgow Gin and Prometheus Single Malt Whisky. We have done business all over the world, from the USA to the UAE, Denmark, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France and Italy. “
Liam explained that the sale has always been the easiest part of exporting for the Glasgow Distillery Company, but sometimes the company has faced challenges during the process. He said: “The logistics of exporting has been the most challenging aspect so far.
“But thankfully language barriers, currency changes, etiquette and culture haven’t caused any difficulties, as we have been well prepared before we visited any market to make sure we know the ‘dos and don’ts’ of the culture.”
When asked if he had any advice for companies who are looking to take the first step towards exploring overseas markets, Liam said: “I’d say it’s definitely important to do your research and make sure you visit the market before you start exporting.
“There is also a wealth of financial support out there, SDI (Scottish Development International) has been extremely supportive, and we have also had support from UKTI (UK Trade & Investment).”
Exporting and international trade remain high on the Scottish Government’s economic growth agenda and the Scottish Export Awards, in association with Scottish Enterprise, are about recognising the excellence in those emerging, wealth creating companies that are selling their products, services and expertise in scores of overseas markets.
