Yorkshire and The Humber business urged to export

Throughout August 2016, the Government’s Exporting is GREAT initiative in Yorkshire and the Humber aims to help businesses in construction and infrastructure secure contracts overseas.

Exporting is GREAT Yorkshire and the Humber is already reporting an upward trend in this sector, with construction businesses reporting a 122% year-on-year rise in new overseas deals in 2016, a near doubling of a 67% increase in 2015.

Businesses from the region are exploring potential contracts in Western Europe, the Middle East, North America, Eastern Europe, Africa, Australasia, South East Asia and Latin America.

Following a visit to Leeds this year by the British ambassador to promote opportunities in Sweden, Exporting is GREAT is making businesses aware of a constructioninfrastructure programme throughout Sweden including developing a new high speed rail system featuring around 150 bridges.

Neil Brown, an Exporting is GREAT international trade adviser (ITA) said: “Yorkshire was the birthplace of the industrial revolution with our construction specialists at the forefront of building the world we know today. Across the globe, they are still recognized as among the best in the world thanks to those early pioneers.

“Exporting has a wealth of benefits. Not only does it help to spread risk and make businesses more resilient should we endure another downturn, it also helps to enhance business by adding to experience and expertise.

AchtisGroup, based at Peryton Park, Grimsby North was established by David Owen and Karen Kennedy to supply the construction industry with resin and cement-based flooring products and has since entered the market for hard-wearing, seamless floors in UK homes.

It has since expanded into markets overseas by selling its specialist floor coverings via an office in Belgium but also to Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and Germany, with almost 90% of the firm’s turnover now emanating from exports.

Founder Karen Kennedy said: “Working with Exporting is GREAT has made this all possible as we really didn’t know anything about exporting and found it quite daunting.  The ITAs are second to none.
