For business communities around the region, connectivity into an expanded Heathrow in conjunction with continuing to build more local services to business destinations through Doncaster Sheffield Airport is critical.
Doncaster Chamber CEO, Dan Fell said: "The long-awaited decision on increasing runway capacity in the UK will be welcomed by Doncaster businesses and exporters in the region. Government has prevaricated for far too long on this issue and – following the EU Referendum result – it was absolutely imperative to send the world an ‘open for business’ message.
"It is now imperative that Heathrow becomes a bona fide hub airport that benefits the entire UK and not just the South East and we would call on Heathrow and the Government to ensure that an element of this new capacity stays ring-fenced for a suitable proportion of new slots for domestic routes. We would also encourage government to explore short term options for this at RAF Northolt as has been mooted by a number of independent experts.
"Finally, the Government must not regard the Heathrow decision as ‘job done’. When it comes to aviation capacity businesses want to see a global hub airport in the UK but also want to see vibrant regional airports that serve local business communities. As such, strategically significant regional airports like Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which is unconstrained for expansion in both passenger and cargo movements must be considered in developing a wider aviation strategy for the UK and prioritised when it comes to potential infrastructure investment."
