Founded by entrepreneur Dennie Smith, Old Style Dating is changing the way dating is done online, basing the platform on respect, good manners, and a true desire for commitment.
Dennie, who also runs a vintage hair salon near London, has seen her desire to bring back old-style romance rewarded after being shortlisted in the best new start-up category at the 2018 Croydon Business Excellence Awards.
She launched her online dating site earlier this year, perhaps aptly on Valentine’s Day, and has seen it continue to grow since then.
Old Style Dating is for people who are looking for respect, commitment and love, rather than the short-term flings common to many other dating sites and apps.
Mother-of-four Dennie, who also runs Vintage 62 hair salon in Selsdon, Surrey, was inspired to launch the site by her own daughter’s search for love.
She said: “When I set up my salon I went with the vintage look and it’s really popular so I’ve extended that to the dating site as well.
“I saw my daughter getting fed up with hook-up sites and time-wasters so I thought, I know, I’ll set something up myself for people like me who want to be treated me with respect.
“I spoke to customers at the salon about it and a lot of them said it’d be nice to see a return to good manners and respect. Who doesn’t like to be treated well or be sent flowers?”
Dennie’s website encourages romance and offers tips on building a proper relationship.
Members must be over 25 and Dennie personally vets users to make sure they stick to the rules of decency.
The site has already attracted a lot of media interest – and has caught the imagination of people around the globe.
Membership is half price up to and including Valentine’s Day 2019.
“It’s going brilliantly,” Dennie continued. “We have people of all ages on there. It doesn’t matter who are you or how old you are, it’s nice to be treated well. I keep an eye on the site and remove anybody I think is dodgy and women tell me that makes them feel really reassured.
“I did a radio interview recently and overnight 101 people signed up! I’ve also had messages from New York and Australia asking if I operate over there but I think I need to get the British one running smoothly first.
“I’m not trying to take over the world – if people want to use hook-up sites they can use those, but I want to provide something for people who are looking for a genuine relationship, respect and commitment.”
Dennie’s refreshing vision for online dating has proven a hit, with Old Style Dating shortlisted for best new start-up at the Croydon Business Excellence Awards, along with nine other young companies.
The seventh annual Croydon Business Excellence Awards will be presented at a gala dinner and charity ball on Thursday, October 4 at The Grand Sapphire Hotel in Croydon.
Dennie said: “I am absolutely over the moon to be nominated – and I really want to win! It’s not been an easy journey getting here so I’m absolutely delighted.”
