Just because August is drawing to a close doesn’t mean you’ve missed your chance for some sunshine during your break this year.
San Francisco is the cultural capital of California, known for its cable cars, beautiful bays, high hills and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. A hub for finance and technology, it’s hard to resist the chance to visit Alcatraz, but Fisherman’s Wharf and the Bay area are great places to enjoy the sunshine.
Don’t miss: Mission District, with its Latin culture and beautiful street murals.
Don’t forget: Your ESTA, if you’re not American. Immigration queues are known to be pretty long, so allow plenty of time for transfers and be prepared!
Time difference: BST – 8hrs
Tokyo and Kyoto are the most visited destinations in Japan, but the infamous bullet trains allow you fast, efficient access to the rest of the country. The culture, the food and the aesthetics are all amazing reasons to visit; don’t let concerns about communication stop you. Off the beaten path, locations like Mount Koya’s temples take in paying guests, giving you the chance to witness the monk’s morning prayer ceremonies in all their glory.
Don’t miss: the traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, often held in historic venues.
Don’t forget: to do your research before pressing ANY button in a Japanese toilet!
Time difference: Tokyo is BST +8hrs
There’s so much more to the Greek islands than Corfu, Crete and Cyprus, and you don’t have to make the decision on where to go based on location – there are lots of specialist interest and activity based holiday experts too, so whether you enjoy cycling, food, or archaeology, there are options you’ll love. Koufonisia, or the suntrap isles, can only be accessed by boat and is a haven away from tourist tropes, whilst Hydra is almost entirely car-free… but they have donkeys instead!
Don’t miss: the crystal-clear waters of Firiplaka, on Milos.
Don’t forget: a book or five. If WiFi is vitally important to you, check ahead well in advance, because it’s not commonplace on these isles.
Time difference: Athens is BST +2hrs
A chain of eight islands, Hawaii offers the most diverse variety of climates you’ll find anywhere in the world, so pick your destination based on your interests. It’s Oahu island that’s generated most of the imagery we commonly associate with the area, where the actual island of Hawaii is home to the very active Mauna Loa volcano. Maui can give you the most spectacular sunrises, while Kauai is laid back and relaxed in nature.
Don’t miss: the Na Pali coastline, best viewed by helicopter trip.
Don’t forget: it’s not possible to fly direct from the UK, so check your connection possibilities – if you connect through LA, you could equally enjoy a day or two there en route!
Time difference: BST -11hrs (there is no daylight savings time in Hawaii)
