Beau from O Communications in Newcastle
Calm natured, Beau offers a welcome distraction to O Communications team and is never short of volunteers for walkies.
What does your company do?
We are an integrated creative communications agency in Newcastle, working for national and regional clients, from food and drink brands to retail chains and travel operators.
Since our inception in 2005, we have worked with a portfolio of household names including Dr. Martens, Flymo, British Masters, Goldsmiths, Primula and Parkdean Resorts.
And introduce us to your workplace pet… What’s their name, and what kind of pet are they?
Our workplace pet is Beau the Black Labrador! He belongs to Kari and Robin Owers, our MD and creative director, and he can often be found snoozing in Rob’s studio!
How did they become your workplace pet?
Beau is 8 now, so he joined us when he got past the naughty puppy stage! Our owners worked long hours building the business and didn’t want to leave him by himself at home.
What’s it like having an animal around the place?
It’s great to have an animal around the place and we all do find ourselves popping in to say hello to Beau when he is here! He has a lovely nature and welcomes strokes – there’s always excitement from the animal lovers in the team whenever Beau pops in to visit!
What made you decide to bring pets into your workplace?
We’ve got a relaxed friendly vibe at the agency, a dog just makes it even more fun.
Does it have an effect on stress, and on how the whole team works together?
His owners say they find him calming as he lies at their feet - and the team love to see him bound up the stairs in the morning - he definitely raises a smile.
Any unexpected benefits? Or, indeed, pitfalls?
No pitfalls at all - we love him!
Who’s responsible for walking, feeding, cleaning… any of the ‘less popular’ jobs?
As Beau is Kari & Robin’s dog, they are the ones who take care of him. However, members of the team are more than happy to chip in if needed – especially with walks on a nice day during a lunch break!
Do you ever find it a distraction?
Beau is very well behaved and a calm natured dog – he spends most of his time outside of our main client services room, so he isn’t a distraction at all. If anything, it’s a great way to take a short break away from the desk to say hello!
What would you tell other people who were reluctant to take in an office pet?
There are of course the negatives of an office pet, such as allergies, but we believe it’s a nice addition to have an animal around the office.
