Kevin and David of Butternut Box
Butternut Box, a subscription service which supplies home cooked pet food to homes across the UK, has raised £5m to accelerate its ambitious growth plans.
London-based Butternut Box has closed a £5m funding round led by Literacy Capital and White Star Capital, which has backed the likes of Freshly and One Dollar Shave Club.
The company was launched just under two years ago by entrepreneurs David Nolan and Kevin Glynn and has already delivered over one million meals to dogs across the UK.
The pair came up with the idea after David was browsing the Battersea Dogs Home website and spotted a Staffordshire Bull terrier which he fell in love with at first sight.
As Kevin explains: “For Butternut Box, it all started with a dog that wouldn’t stop farting! Rudie was a rescue dog who had a wide range of health issues that were traced back to over processed pet food.
“On the back of this revelation, Dave started to home cook for Rudie and she had a remarkable turnaround due to a change in her food.
“After realising there was no company providing fresh, home-cooked dog food that resulted in dogs living long and living well, we decided to quit our jobs and set it up ourselves!”
The pair are now planning to grow the business rapidly and will use the funding to launch new products and expand its reach across the UK.
Kevin concluded: “This latest round of funding will allow us to launch a new dish, launch a snack line and build out the team to help serve more dogs around the UK.
“We all care so much about what goes into our own food but so many dogs are eating food that is often mislabelled and not suitable for them.
“Pet parents are left choosing their dog food in an aisle cluttered with bin bags and washing powder, dominated by a few unhealthy choices.
“Customers have told us that our food has made a remarkable difference to their dog's behaviour and health, so we want to continue making this positive impact and helping dogs live healthier, happier lives."
