Ewan Venters, CEO of Fortnum & Mason
The iconic department store is set to open its first standalone store and restaurant in the Square Mile at the Royal Exchange.
Fortnum & Mason has announced plans to open a new London outlet at The Royal Exchange by October 2018.
Fortnum’s has been an iconic institution in the capital since 1707, most noted for its globally recognised flagship in Piccadilly.
This opening will be the first City-based operation for the brand, which will cater for the global financial community, offering its gift and hamper selection in addition to the very best food and drink from its famed food halls.
Appropriately based in the impressive surroundings of The Royal Exchange, this will be the fourth store in London for Fortnum & Mason and marks the continued development of the business at home and abroad, following retail partnerships across Asia with Shinsegae and Lane Crawford.
“Fortnum’s at The Royal Exchange is the manifestation of our message that London remains open, and that the world’s most important financial centre in the City remains vibrant,” said Ewan Venters, CEO of Fortnum & Mason.
“The Royal Exchange provides not only an important postcode location, but a culturally important environment bringing together two brands with a shared history in trade.”
The opening of Fortnum & Mason reinforces Oxford Properties’ (owners of The Royal Exchange since 2013) support of promoting The Royal Exchange as a contemporary luxury destination.
Deborah Green, director of asset management at Oxford Properties, said: “We are delighted to welcome Fortnum & Mason to The Royal Exchange, one of London’s finest landmarks.
“The opening of Fortnum & Mason will be a memorable moment in The Royal Exchange’s storied history and will further enhance its collection of luxury shopping boutiques and dining. The addition of this prestigious brand will combine two of London’s prominent names in retail.
“Over centuries of trading both have established themselves as iconic destinations in London and together with Fortnum & Mason, The Royal Exchange will continue to be where the City converges to meet, eat and shop.”
Fortnum & Mason's agreement to open at The Royal Exchange is conditional and is subject to the City of London planning.
