Rose Sterling is the founder of Go Gorgeous Online, a new support platform for hair and beauty professionals. She tells BQ what made her leave a comfortable job she enjoyed to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
Tell us about your business, what does it do?
Go Gorgeous Online is an online support platform and monthly subscription box for professionals in the hair and beauty industry. We provide access to a wide range of workshops and certified short courses as well as online support and work opportunities.
What did you do before you started this business?
I`ve managed salons for Regis and worked for Toni & Guy as well various other salons.
For 12 years I worked in key account management and sales for Goldwell, Revlon and L’Oréal, supporting salon groups and independent salons in London and the South East.
What inspired you to start up?
I noticed a trend in the industry where professionals wanted more freedom in how they work, where they work and the products they work with. Al lot of them want affordable access to training and want to know how to get into freelance session work. With Go Gorgeous Online, I wanted to ensure we could support these vital areas and build an international community of professionals whose combined expertise can influence future industry trends.
How would you describe your business to your grandma?
Hey Nannie, you know your hairdresser, Anna? Well, do you know she can get training to get even better at doing your hair and get amazing products each month to smooth your curls even better than before? She can even get pictures of her work published in glossy magazines and create videos of her doing your stylish hair? Yes, it’s my company Go Gorgeous Online!
Where do you get advice, support or help?
I have various mentors who are experts in their field that provide support and advice to assist me in my new venture.
Finance is one of the most common barriers to starting up. How did you access the finance you needed?
The company has been funded by myself so far, however we are currently seeking investment to take the company to the next level to build it into a global platform.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
The biggest achievement so far has been bringing Go Gorgeous Online to fruition. I have been working on the concept for six years, during which time I identified a gap in the market to support professionals in the hair and beauty industry. The feedback has been phenomenal so far, with leading brands and professionals who really want to be part of the Go Gorgeous Online community. Watch this space!
How do you differentiate your business from others?
Currently we are the world’s first subscription box and support platform for hair and beauty professionals! Most of the other beauty subscription boxes out there are consumer-led, but we want to make sure that every box has products selected to be predominantly filled with professional brands. We then use the Courses and Workshops to immerse each customer into the brands they got in the last ProBox, which is where they get tips and hints, and learn new skills from their new favourite brands.
What’s it like to be your own boss?
There is literally nothing like it! I have always been quite entrepreneurial, so it flows naturally. I was fortunate when I worked for L’Oréal that my skills meant my superiors could allow me to get on and deliver results without the need to micro manage and monitor my accounts. The freedom is amazing and I`m able to put in everything I`ve learnt over the years in to a business I love. I mean, you do end up working 12-hour days sometimes, but building my vision is what makes it all more than worth-while!
Where do you see your business in five years’ time?
In five years we aim to be worldwide on so many different levels; having multiple “Hubs” all around the world, enhancing our support and education to a more personal, one-on-one experience for our professionals internationally to help take their career to new levels. We would love to partner with premium industry leaders like YSL Beauty, Tom Ford Beauty and Chanel Beauty to create tailored collaborative courses, this is always going to be an important aspect of our vision.
The Go Gorgeous Online App will be launched and will further develop our professional community and artist profiles further. We have lots of opportunities planned.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Be fearless! It may sound a bit cliché, but it has been my fearlessness and perseverance that has really pushed me to take risks in my career. There have been many jobs I have had in the past, like my job at L’Oréal for example, where it was very secure and stable.
I had a nice company car, petrol card, a comfortable salary, and to leave that and take a risk to start my entrepreneurship – which is never guaranteed – is a massive risk when you have children and a family depending on you! But the challenges, failures and victories that you embark on throughout your journey really make you look back and be so grateful when you come out of the other side; and essentially makes that initial leap of faith so worth it!
