The Leeds-based luxury bed manufacturer has felled its first trees from its wholly owned and responsibly managed forest in Sand Hutton, Yorkshire.
The timber, felled from Corsican Pine, Sycamore, Scots Pine and Mixed Broadleaves trees, will be used in its luxury divans and headboards.
The bed maker was founded in 1840 and is one of Britain’s most established and innovative bed and mattress manufacturers – has been Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited for over seven years, meaning all the wood used in its products comes from responsibly managed forests.
The 56-acre forest in Sand Hutton was acquired by the company to further its commitment to vertical integration and responsible manufacturing.
Harrison Spinks is one of the most vertically integrated bed manufacturers in the world, drawing its own wire for its unique spring technology and growing natural fillings on its own farm in Yorkshire.
The Harrison Spinks team has worked with forestry experts, Scurrah Associates, to create a woodland management plan that will work in the best interest of the natural ecosystem and the local community of Sand Hutton.
This includes a schedule of clear felling, replanting and thinning to develop standing timber in the future.
Simon Spinks, managing director at Harrison Spinks said: “The first felling from our forest is an important milestone in the Harrison Spinks story and we’re delighted that the hard work from our Forest Managers and Lumberjacks, or ‘Slumberjacks’ as we call them, is coming to fruition.
“Our aim is for Harrison Spinks to be a world leader in sustainable bed-manufacturing, so by owning and managing our forest we can ensure that more timber used in our luxury beds, divans and headboards is renewable, responsibly managed and grown considerately.
“We’re delighted that we’ve brought another piece of our supply chain into the Harrison Spinks family of companies and are excited to see how the forest develops before our next felling in 2019.”
The timber felled in the woodland by Job Earnshaws Ltd will now be kiln dried and ready for use in Harrison Spinks’ Leeds factory from the end April 2018.
Harrison Spinks is one of Great Britain's most established and innovative bed makers. Established in 1840, it manufactures luxury mattresses under the Harrison, Somnus and Spink & Edgar brands.
Harrison Spinks is one of the most vertically integrated bed manufacturers in the world from drawing its own wire for its unique spring technology to growing natural fillings on its own farm in Yorkshire.
Both the unique spring technology and growing natural fillings have been recognised with two Queen's awards for Enterprise in Innovation and Sustainable Development.
