Peter speaks to BQ about his journey from professional golfing aspirations to producing portable power.
What is it the company does?
We manufacture and distribute portable power products including jumpstarters, phonecase chargers, portable power stations.
Describe your role in no more than 100 words
I look after all parts of the business - sales, logistics, marketing, budgets, administration.
Give us a brief timeline of your career so far – where did you start, how did you move on?
I’ve been in sales for more than 25 years - working for organisations such as Michelin, Castrol and Continental Tyre. I started in TSB Bank and have had a desire to not be bored, so always looking for something new or a project to be a part of.
What do you believe makes a great leader?
Being able to listen and understand colleagues and customers.
What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?
Developing out the Powercases brand while building my coaching business.
How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?
I play golf, go for walks, spend time with my wife and grandchildren, read books.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a golfer, specifically in the US for some reason.
Any pet hates in the workplace? What do you do about them?
Not taking the time to talk with colleagues and quick character judgements. Chat with people and try to offer a different perspective and be interested in them.
Where do you see the company in five years’ time?
I would like to have grown the business to a point where we have sold it.
What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?
Understand your product and its offer, but more importantly, understand your customers and why should they buy from you.
What do you wish someone had told you when you started out?
It will take you 2-3 years to establish your business, so be prepared for lean times.
