Mr Wing Yip
The owner of the locally founded Chinese superstore, Wing Yip, has created two new undergraduate scholarships for Aston’s business studies students.
Mr Wing Yip, chairman of Wing Yip, said: “The Wing Yip family is delighted to be donating two undergraduate scholarships. Aston University has a world class reputation as a place to study and it is a privilege to be in a position to give something back.”
The company has donated the scholarships via the family’s foundation. Wing Yip and Brothers, together with their family, set up the W Wing Yip and Brothers Foundation in 1985 for the promotion of education and the relief of poverty and sickness. Each year, the Foundation makes donations to a wide range of good causes as well as to support both Chinese and UK students in their education.
Mr Wing Yip explains: “We established the W Wing Yip & Brothers Bursaries to encourage and provide financial assistance to students to complete their studies. Since its inception, more than 300 bursaries have been granted. Through the donation of scholarships and bursaries, we hope to give more students access to outstanding educational programmes that will provide the foundation to build a strong career.”
Director of campaigns at Aston University, Andrew Harris, added: “With the help of our close friends like the Wing Yip and Brothers Foundation we can support very able students from low-income backgrounds who might struggle to find the funds to come to university with confidence. At Aston, we support these students well, and have high graduate employability rates. We are enormously grateful for the help that the Foundation is providing”.
The new awards have been named the Wing Yip scholarships and will be given to two students beginning their studies in September 2016.
