Being managing director of SDL Auctions doesn’t have Andrew Parker chained to a desk. Far from it, as he’s still an auctioneer, travelling the country…
What is it the company does?
As one of the UK’s largest property auction networks, SDL Auctions specialises in selling a wide range of residential and commercial properties on behalf of both private individuals and corporate clients. It was established following the SDL Group’s acquisition of a range of auction businesses in 2016. Throughout 2018 SDL Auctions will hold 40 auctions across the North West and Midlands.
Describe your role in no more than 100 words
My role as managing director and Auctioneer at SDL Auctions is a varied one, starting from preparing auction valuations for both private and corporate clients. As the managing director I also oversee the sales and marketing and finance departments, which means that I am generally in the office for two or three days a week whilst on the road for the remainder. 40 auctions per year across the country keeps me pretty busy!
Give us a brief timeline of your career so far – where did you start, how did you move on?
My property career dates back some 25 years when I started off in property services, followed by a spell in sales and marketing which led me to a 10-year media career. I returned to agency back in 2007, becoming a partner of Graham Penny Auctions which was acquired by SDL Group back in 2016.
What do you believe makes a great leader?
I believe a great leader shows kindness and compassion and is able to remain calm under pressure.
What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?
I believe the biggest challenge in my current position has been the sale of Graham Penny Auctions and the transition to SDL Group which has created some fantastic opportunities but brought several challenges integrating the businesses.
How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?
I like to exercise regularly and spend quality time with my family.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Well I’m still little now at five-foot one-inch, so I’m not sure I have actually grown up yet! Joking aside, I have always had an interest in properties and people.
Any pet hates in the workplace? What do you do about them?
Time wasting. Try to set clear goals and objectives to make sure that everybody knows what is expected of them.
Where do you see the company in five years’ time?
I believe in five years’ time the business will look very different to how it does today but will be the number one auctioneer in the UK.
What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?
Be patient – everything takes longer than you think it will, and just keep going.
What do you wish someone had told you when you started out?
The same as the last question. Be patient and enjoy the journey!
