It should come as no surprise that startup digital pet insurance provider Waggel are dog lovers. Meet Sailor, Mathilda, and Koda…
What does your company do?
We are an upcoming ready to launch digital pet insurance, focusing on the community based aspect of Pet Insurance and adding rewards and charitable gifting!
And introduce us to your workplace pet… What’s their name, and what kind of pet are they?
Sailor – Golden Retriever
Mathilda – Mini Dachshund
Koda – Japanese Spitz
Our 3 doggy trio have different personalities; Sailor is full of cuddles and playtime, Mathilda is our fierce protector and boss of the office and Koda is always happy to share your lunch.
How did they become your workplace pet?
Sailor is our founder’s dog, Mathilda our Events Manager’s dog and Koda our PR Manager’s dog.
What’s it like having an animal around the place?
We love having a dog friendly office, not only does it keep us all relaxed and smiling it also means we take consistent breaks. Time to bond over the dogs and also keeps us calm.
What made you decide to bring pets into your workplace?
As a pet company, it’s best to represent what you believe! Who doesn’t want dog cuddles mid-day?
Does it have an effect on stress, and on how the whole team works together?
We take a consistent lunch time break together, making sure as a team we’re bonding and taking the time off to talk to each other and build relationships outside of the office. Dogs are proven to increase endorphins and lower the stress hormone cortisol, having a ruff day? The dogs are happy to sit near you, provide a 10min break of play and obviously lots of cuddles.
Any unexpected benefits? Or, indeed, pitfalls?
The local offices around us, love to visit. They are a great way to network, communicate and meet new members of other businesses. Pitfalls, our office can smell a bit pongy at times.
Who’s responsible for walking, feeding, cleaning… any of the ‘less popular’ jobs?
All the colleagues and team members pitch in, but essentially all jobs fall down to their owners making sure they are keeping a keen eye on their pets.
Ever find it a distraction?
Yes, there are times when the dogs can be over excited and bark and cause a little ruckus but this is rare. Best not to think of it as a distraction, but your pet telling you it’s time for a break!
What would you tell other people who were reluctant to take in an office pet?
It’s good to be cautious, it’s important to assess a situation, an office space or even your pet’s behaviour before considering going into an office.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Make sure to always ask your employer first, check out your third-party insurance and health and safety comes first.
