Describe your role in no more than 100 words
My business partner and I are responsible for the day-to-day management of both our UK and Dutch operations. This includes overseeing the credit teams and working with our four full-time developers on the technology platform that sits at the heart of our business. In addition, time is spent travelling to meet with our partner network of accountants and corporate finance advisors who form an integral part of our funding process.
Give us a brief timeline of your career so far – where did you start, how did you move on?
I began my career as an equity analyst with Numis Securities, an investment bank. After a period managing a publicly listed investment vehicle, I met my business partner in 2015 and we began building Caple.
What do you believe makes a great leader?
Leading from the front and emotional intelligence.
What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?
When you are a new business every problem feels like a huge challenge. In an industry as large and complex as financial services credibility and reputation are so important that building and retaining them are a constant focus.
How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?
When I have time, I go fishing.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Any pet hates in the workplace? What do you do about them?
Management speak. I don’t tolerate it.
Where do you see the company in five years’ time?
As a trusted and respected partner to SMEs across Europe.
What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?
Be willing to take advice. Most challenges are not unique and you can benefit from others’ experience.
What do you wish someone had told you when you started out?
That people will defend the status quo, not because it is correct, but because they have an interest in maintaining it.
