Turnbull and Thomas, which has a showroom at Eaglescliffe, already boast a strong online presence.
Thanks to this, the company decided to take on web development students, Oliver Slade and Alex Youngman, for one day a week.
The placement will see the students working on the firm’s website development, interacting with media and marketing teams from other suppliers and assisting with online orders.
Managing director Terence Turnbull, who opened the company alongside entrepreneur Gareth Thomas, said: “These work placements are part of Turnbull and Thomas’ desire to interact with the wider community.
"We also consider it important that young people are given the opportunity to gain invaluable work experience during their studies to help make them work-ready.”
Turnbull also stresses his belief that students undertaking work experience placements or internships should be paid.
It is hoped that through placement opportunities, students will gain not only technical knowledge, but other skills sought after by employers such as communication and team work.
“It is fantastic to put the knowledge I am learning at University in to practice in a real workplace situation,” comments Oliver.
“I am sure broadening my skills will stand me in good stead for when I finish my studies and enter the work of work.”
