Boost for town centre

Boost for town centre

Darlington’s town centre shopping venue the Cornmill is being revamped over summer by its new owner, NewRiver Retail.

Opened in 1992, Cornmill was previously in the Neptune Portfolio, which included shopping centres in Wakefield and Cardiff. NewRiver bought all three properties last January for £92.3m in total, Cornmill being dearest.

Cornmill’s design uplift promised, raises hopes the entire town centre will benefit. Presently futures of the nearby covered market and the elegant central library building – 150 years old and 131 years old respectively – are uncertain under local council decisions to achieve spending cuts by relocating library stock to the modern Dolphin Leisure Centre. It would then dispose of the present library building, and close or sell the covered market.
