Meet the MD: Amanda Gardiner of Durham Lifting

Meet the MD: Amanda Gardiner of Durham Lifting

Amanda Gardiner became the MD of her family business, Durham Lifting, at just 23 years old. Now after being in the same role for 28 years, Amanda talked to BQ about how she got started and where she plans to go from here.

Describe your role in no more than 100 words.

My role at Durham Lifting is to promote growth and development within the organisation, whilst also keeping the standards of quality we have become accustom to. This involves driving the team and organisation into new areas for development, whilst sustaining and supporting our existing customer base.

What is it the company does?

Durham Lifting provides engineered solutions to lifting problems by providing a range of quality products for both sale and hire.

We also provide the offshore, oil and gas market with a large comprehensive testing facility to ensure equipment will work safely within the chosen scope of work.

Give us a brief timeline of your career so far

At the age of 14 I was always interested on gaining valuable work experience at my dad’s company Durham Lifting. At the young age of 23 my Dad promoted me to managing director; this was such a great honour but also a lot of hard work and came with big responsibilities. I have learned so much, mostly by making mistakes but I am still here 28 years later enjoying what I do!

Where did you start, how did you move on?

After starting my working career with Durham Lifting it seemed like a natural progression to work with my dad and I certainly enjoyed my role, as time progressed I became more structured and focussed on the business which lead to my promotion at 23, I have held this role ever since.

What do you believe makes a great leader?

Durham Lifting would not be successful without the great team I have supporting me, I believe the key to great leadership is motivating and developing the team you work with!

What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

The biggest challenge for me has got to be working with members of my family!

How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?

I am a big believer in staying fit and healthy so exercise is a very big stress reliever for me, I also make time to listen to music and spend quality time with my friends and family.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I have been so lucky that I have been able to continue the success of my father’s company, however when I was little I was so busy enjoying life that I thought more about travelling and all the places I wanted to see in the world.

Any pet hates in the workplace?

My pet hate is definitely slowness, but I can be very impatient sometimes!

Where do you see the company in five years time?

We are hoping to improve the services within the organisation whilst also working with staff to develop their current skills.

What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

Stay focused, develop and invest in the people around you, know your limitations and know when to say no.
