Turkish bazaar lights up Durham Market

Turkish bazaar lights up Durham Market

A Durham Market Hall business has expanded for the second time since opening three years ago, almost doubling in size.

How Bazaar!!, owned by Metin Koyuncu, sells authentic Turkish gifts including Turkish mosaic lamps.

Koyuncu, who arrived in the UK from Turkey more than 20 years ago, said he always wanted to import authentic Turkish lamps, and in 2013 left his job as a barista in Newcastle to set up his business.

“I was always waiting for the perfect time, and one day came to the conclusion it was now or never.  Customers have always been incredibly positive about the stall,” said Koyuncu.

“There’s a real appreciation that you can find these beautiful products right here in Durham.  My aim now is to spread the word and reach an ever wider audience.

“I grew up in Turkey, and loved everything about the Grand Bazaar, and so I’ve tried to recreate that feel.”

Koyuncu now aims to expand his business even further and introduce a wider audience to his products.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Market Hall, said: “We’re always thrilled to see businesses in the Market Hall growing and expanding.

“Metin’s offering is not matched elsewhere in the North East.  How Bazaar!! is a great example of the variety of products you’ll discover in Durham’s Market Hall.”
