The once team of six has grown to 20, as the agency founded by Lucy Batley and Robert Brown back in early 2007 celebrates its 10th anniversary.
JUMP is a digital and creative agency, providing branding and design solutions to a range of businesses across the North East and beyond, and their celebrations follow Lucy’s recent appointment as Ambassador for Creative and Digital for the Institute of Directors (IoD’s) regional committee.
Both Rob and Lucy met in shared office space in Jesmond back in 2007. At the time, they both had their own separate businesses providing complimentary services with Rob involved in technology and Lucy in brand design.
They used to joke that there were only 12 steps between them and it was within weeks that they started working together figuring two heads were definitely better than one.
The rest is history and JUMP was born, aptly named to represent their journey in taking a leap of faith but also highlighting their ambition to help our customers take a step up in their own businesses.
“We have always said that one of the best parts of our job is learning about other people’s worlds,” said Lucy. “One day we will be researching the stigma of ageing, the next day 1950’s hair pomades!
“We have been very lucky to work on some exciting projects (there are too many to list) including well-loved local and national brands such as the People’s Theatre, Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle University and the National Trust.”
Based at Milburn House on Dean Street in Newcastle since 2009, the once team of 6 has grown steadily over the years to a strong group of 20, consisting of a mix of designers, developers and support staff.
Offering a range of services under one roof across brand, design, web and digital, the team pride themselves on being able to deliver bespoke solutions to clients.
“There are always challenges,” Robert concedes, “and we firmly believe without them we cannot improve as a business or as individuals. One of the biggest challenges is finding the right people to join our design and development teams.
“The North East of England is a very competitive region in the industry we work in so great people can be snapped up very quickly. We want to stand out from our competitors as a company and feel that our culture and the creative environment in which our staff work is a great reason to choose JUMP for a career.”
In terms of advice, the pair have some words of wisdom to share: “The best advice would be to improvise and adapt quickly to survive and thrive,” Lucy says. “You have to plan in business but also be reactive to external factors and challenges in the marketplace. You will make mistakes along the way, but the important thing is to learn from them.
“We have had experiences that have been very challenging but when you start to see the light of day, the upside is that they also provide the perfect opportunity for change. In order to be the best you can be, we believe people should push themselves, step out of their comfort zones and never stop learning. It is all worth it when you can look back and see how far you have come.”
And their plans to grow JUMP have really only just started. “We want to expand our team and grow the business even further, never losing sight of the quality of the work that we produce. Our success to date is based on our reputation and we want to ensure that we are always at the forefront of people’s minds when they want to take the next steps with their own brand, whether that is digitally or through design. In short we want to be the most renowned digital and design agency in the region.”
Lucy however has recently been appointed Ambassador for Creative and Digital for the Institute of Directors (IoD’s) regional committee. The position aims to help grow the profile of North East business and ensure it is represented within the IoD’s influential, national policy voice. She also wants to use her influence to encourage more women into the creative sector and help in the quest to retain much needed talent within the North East.
To support JUMP’s ongoing expansion, the team is taking on larger office space within Milburn House and will be looking to make a range of new appointments over the next 12 months.
