Canny Milk has been selected to exhibit in the Innovation Showcase at this year's VentureFest North East. Founder Liam Watson gives a short but sweet explanation of what the company does.
Describe your business in no more than 60 words
We make all natural, sugar free, chocolate milk.
What prompted you to enter the innovation showcase?
To show others where we are, what our plans are and ultimately get some feedback
Describe the innovation that you’ve entered the showcase with.
Our refined sugar free chocolate milk!
How would you describe that innovation to your grandparents?
“Hi Grandma, we basically take chocolate milk, you know what that is, don’t you?”
“And then we take the sugar, you know what that is, don’t you?”
“And we take it out.”
“To make a drink that people love, that also does them good!”
What are the best and worst parts of trying to be innovative in your business?
Costs. To be different to everyone else, and do what everyone else isn’t, costs more money than following the ‘norm’. We have to find new ways of doing things, this is guess work, followed by testing, then more refined guess work!
What are the biggest challenges you face?
Getting something new in FMCG taken up and ultimately getting to the volume point we need to be able to have the resources we want to be able to spread this message.
Where do you get support and advice to help you run your business?
We use a range of mentors as well as professional services and Entrepreneurial Spark Newcastle where we are based.
What does being chosen for the innovation showcase mean to you?
It hopefully means that people believe that what we have done and are trying to do is not only a market fit, but something people believe in as much as we do.
Where do you see your company in five years’ time?
Hopefully having a 10% share of the UK flavoured milk market.
What would you tell businesses who are hoping to be more innovative?
If you don't, someone else 100% will.
