Exports from the Northern Powerhouse continue to soar

The export of goods from across the Northern Powerhouse increased by 10.3% to £58.1bn during the year to September 2017, as businesses capitalised on the weakening of the pound.

Combined, exporters from across the Northern Powerhouse saw exports of goods increase by 10.3% to £58.1bn during the year ended September 2017.

Yorkshire and the Humber led the charge, with goods exported increasing by 15.2% to £16.4bn whereas in the North East, goods exports increased by 8.4% to £12.7bn and in the North West, goods exports increased by 8.6% to £29bn.

The top buyer of English goods during the period was the United States with the Netherlands proving most popular for Scotland, Germany for Wales and the Irish Republic for Northern Ireland.

International trade secretary, Dr Liam Fox, said: “Today’s figures show that every part of the UK is benefitting from increased trade with the world. More than a year since the EU referendum, exports of goods across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all up.

“As an international economic department, we’re supporting businesses in meeting the international demand for our high quality goods through our Exporting is GREAT campaign.

"We also have hundreds of live exporting opportunities on our website and a network of international advisers helping businesses make the most of the country’s exporting potential.”

Separate ONS monthly figures (September 2017) show that exports of both goods and services increased in the last year by 13.7% to £602bn.

On goods exports, they also show that UK good exports continue to grow faster than UK goods imports; trade in goods exports increased by 16 per cent while imports increased by 12%.

The UK has also attracted more foreign direct investment projects than ever before (year 2016-17). With 2,265 projects recorded, figures show an increase of 2% on the previous year.

This means more than 75,000 new jobs were created, and 32,600 safeguarded, amounting to over 2,000 jobs per week across the country.
