Great British Coin Hunt

The Great British Coin Hunt app

Mediaworks develops new 10 pence piece app

The Newcastle-headquartered digital agency has designed and developed an app to support the rollout of The Royal Mint’s new 10p coins.

Available to download for free from the App Store and Google Play, the app has been created to support the rollout of The Royal Mint’s 26 new 10p coins.

Featuring an A-Z of what makes Britain great, each coin has a quintessentially British item or persona, from James Bond to good old fish and chips.

The coins will be released into circulation systematically and the Great British Coin Hunt app will help collectors keep track of the coins in their collection. Using image recognition technology, users can scan the coins they collect to create a digital record of them.

The app also features map functionality, which shows users where coins have been found in the UK. It also shows where coins have been released and details of swap shop events, to help users find the coins they need to complete their collection.

Speaking about the app, Mediaworks’ creative director Andrew Blenkinsop said: “To design and develop an app of this scale for The Royal Mint is hugely exciting and we’re incredibly proud of the end product we have delivered. We hope both coin collectors and other users will enjoy using the app and the functionality we have included.”

The contract win comes on the back of Mediaworks' successful Snow Dogs app, which was developed to coincide with the St Oswald’s Hospice Great North Snowdogs trail in 2016

Mediaworks worked closely with St Oswald’s to create the app for the Snowdogs sculpture trail, which hit the North East of England in September 2016. Upon its launch, the app charted higher than Minecraft in the App Store and was downloaded over 11,000 times.

Over the course of the trail, the app received in excess of 2.5 million interactions, helping to raise vital funds for St Oswald’s Hospice. The app’s performance helped Mediaworks scoop the Digital & Social Media Award at the North East Business Awards 2017 grand final.
