Tell us about your business, what does it do?
Geek is a data analytics company specialising in job market and skills data, helping everyone from local government, colleges and companies to spend their recruitment, training and skills budgets more effectively to close the skills gap.
And what’s your USP? What makes you different; innovative?
We have invested heavily in our own big data and artificial intelligence reporting platform to ensure we can offer much more detailed, and easier to understand information for our users. We are always looking to stay ahead of the competition, remain relevant through technology and research.
What’s your role in the business; how did you get to where you are now?
I’m the managing director, prior to creating the company I worked in IT for 15 years starting as a software developer and moving up to an IT Architect, latterly helping improve software development teams in financial services.
How would you describe your business to a novice?
We make use of data and information from millions of jobs and careers to help ensure students courses are more relevant to the jobs of the future.
Where do you get advice, support or help?
I speak to other company owners who could be in tech or other sectors but who I can learn from as well as our existing investors – knowing you don’t know everything is really important.
What has been your biggest achievement so far?
Winning larger scale projects and licensing deals and seeing the impact of customers using our insights.
How do you differentiate your business from others?
Providing a unique product mixed with flexible, responsive and personal customer service.
What do you like about being based in the North of England?
Family, quality of life, access to great networks and support with the ability to get to London and back in a day to do business.
Where do you see your business in five years’ time?
The go to company in our sector for customers in the UK and across the world. Helping make a real impact for the benefit of the economy and our future education system.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs or innovators?
Stay humble, ask for advice when you need it – chase customers and revenue not awards when starting out as they are a waste of time.
