Jessica Tomlinson, head distiller at Durham Distillery
Gone are the days when a simple ‘ice and a slice’ would do, as the way we drink gin has come on leaps and bounds becoming somewhat of a super-trend.
We are a nation of ‘amateur gin connoisseurs’, trying out tipples from both large and smaller scale craft distilleries, experimenting with mixers, and different flavour combinations.
Perfect for summer, Jessica Tomlinson who is head distiller at Durham Distillery, the makers of Durham Gin, has shared a selection of unique seasonal garnish options, to shake up our gin drinking habits.
With the addition of a few simple ingredients, serves from a refreshing G&T with an Instagramable edge, to something fresh and fizzy with a tropical feel can be created – perfect for a sunny barbeque or garden party.
Durham Distillery’s guide to summer gin garnishes:
This fragrant evergreen shrub best known for its bright purple colour and distinctive scent adds an aromatic depth to the classic G&T, heightening the spirit’s botanical tones such as juniper berries. For added decoration with a taste of sweetness, mix dried lavender with sugar and roll around the rim of a glass.
The clean and fresh flavour of watermelon or cantaloupe adds something entirely different to gin in comparison to the usual slice of lemon. The earthy, bitter notes in a gin and tonic are cleverly balanced by the sweetness that melon brings. Another plus point is the fruit’s vibrant colouring, adding a fun element.
Whether foraged by hand or shop-bought, bring a nod to the countryside to a G&T by adding a collection of edible florals. As well as being visually pleasing prompting a photo opportunity, this garnish will stimulate the senses and expose the sweetness of elderflower when tastefully combined with Durham Gin.
Ginger ale and mint
Traditionally ginger ale is mostly mixed with dark spirits, but paired with gin gives the classic gin and tonic water combination a tropical spin. Ginger helps to lift flavours in spirits and when mixed with Durham Cask Aged Gin it makes for a deliciously spicy yet subtly sweet drink.
Durham Gin is a product of Durham Distillery; a signature recipe of 10 botanicals including angelica, orange and coriander, as well as elements such as celery seed and pink peppercorn, creating a spicy, savoury and sweet flavour.
