Sonnet 43 Brew House has sent its first container of beer to Shanghai, marking the brewery’s first foray into international markets.
The Durham-based brewery’s beer was noticed by wholesalers in China during the Northern Powerhouse UKTI trade mission to the FHC (Food & Hotel China) exhibition in Shanghai in November last year.
All nine of the brewery’s beers, sent over in can and bottle formats, are set to hit bars in China’s largest city by Autumn this year. The brewery is already in talks for subsequent orders.
The brewery manager, Alan Brown, said: “This is a very exciting opportunity for Sonnet 43. After six years in the brewing trade in the UK, we are now exploring our export options and are keen to venture east. There is a thirst for quality British beers in China and a big market for English products over there so we’re hopeful the beers will get a good reception and flourish. The outlook seems positive as we have already had enquires for sending more beer over.”
In the meantime, the brewery’s coconut mocha porter, Miss Scarlet’s Revolver, gained a gold medal at the North East Regional SIBA awards in the for Strong Beer Over 6.5% in small pack, as well as a Bronze in the Overall Champion for small pack.
Sonnet 43 has been brewing since 2012. It has a collection of beers across its two-main ranges - core and rogue - varying from lager to stout in terms of style. The brewery also produces one-offs, typically on a monthly basis, so they can continually experiment with new hops and styles.
