Estates Excellence & Extra Life offered businesses fully funded support and the tools needed to drive up health and safety standards and achieve improvements in employee health and well-being.
The combined programme created opportunities for local employers to look at their health, safety and welfare needs and to support employee health and wellbeing through a series of activities and events - ranging from simple health advice sessions to health screening and advice on making healthier lifestyle choices.
The setting was the Riverside Industrial Estate and Middehaven area of Middlesbrough. The programme’s aims were not only to improve health, safety and wellbeing, but to create opportunities for partnerships to develop between companies, Middlesbrough Council, regulators and other organisations.
The initiative also provided an opportunity for regulators to support and enhance local business and economic development in line with the Better Business for All approach to regulation.
The emphasis was on a partnership model for delivery. A team of multiagency officers visited each premises that had signed up, assess their needs in terms of workplace health, safety and health improvement and invite them to attend a series of workshops provided by programme partners:
A part of the legacy of the programme is to encourage businesses to achieve recognition in workplace health development through the North East Better Health at Work Award, delivered by Tees Valley Councils.
