A North East networking organisation has added to its team as it gears up for growth.  

The Mussel Club has appointed Sarah Spence as head of marketing as the company looks to expand its offering to businesses.

Bespoke software development consultancy Scott Logic has welcomed four academics to bolster its high-calibre workforce in recent weeks.

The new starters, all of whom are based in Newcastle, joined Scott Logic as software developers during October, the most recent starting at the firm just today.

Two of the new developers, Michael Boyd, 28, and Paul Hands, 27, completed their studies safe in the knowledge they had a job to go to, as both accepted their offers of employment around a year ago.

Specialist advisers to the healthcare sector BW Medical Accountants has welcomed Julia Charlton (FCCA) on board as their newest medical accountant.

She will be supporting the team by offering specialist accountancy and financial planning services to their client base of over 95 GP practices and 1,000 medical professionals.

Jessica Graham, 22, from Morpeth, has joined the Bywell-based company as a trainee land agent having completed a BSc Hons degree in Rural Enterprise and Land Management at Harper Adams University, Shropshire.

Slaley Hall has appointed a new Executive Chef to drive the hotel’s food and beverage offering.

Graham Riley brings over 30 years’ experience in the hospitality industry to Slaley Hall, including working in award-winning restaurant kitchens in Bermuda, France and South Africa.

Gradon Architecture, which has bases in Gateshead, Derry and Ulan Bator, Mongolia, has appointed three new staff, growing the team to 22 across the three locations.

Andrew Thompson, 25, joins the team in Ryton as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant and arrives at the practice with two years’ industry experience under his belt after taking time out to complete a Masters in Architecture.

Commercial law firm Watson Burton has appointed three new partners in a move that has further strengthened its senior team.

Paul Wigham, of Watson Burton’s corporate team, property specialist Julie Farrell-Knowles and Anthony Rance, a commercial litigator based in the Leeds office, have all accepted roles as partners at the Newcastle-headquartered firm.

A North East communications agency has appointed a PR Director to underpin long-term growth plans.

Kate Russell has stepped into the role at Sunderland-based Narrative Integrated Communications, joining the company’s now 19 strong team of marketing and communications specialists.

TTE has established a new relationship with a Middlesbrough-based electrical contractor with the recruitment of a new apprentice to support its workforce development.

Waymid Electrics Ltd has welcomed 18-year-old Ben Weatherill, from Stockton, who will work on a number of large commercial projects with the company and will join as a full-time member of staff after completing his apprenticeship.

The Seaton Lane Inn, part of the Inn Collection Group, has appointed a new general manager.

Paul Brown, 39, joins The Seaton Lane Inn after 21 years’ experience in the pub industry and having previously managing sister inn, The Kings Head Inn located at Newton under Roseberry in North Yorkshire for the last three years.

App developer hedgehog lab has appointed one of the best-known names in North East tech as a non-executive director.

Bob Paton CBE, who retired as MD of Accenture’s Newcastle Delivery Centre in July, will work primarily as advisor to the board and senior management team, focusing on scaling the business while boosting skills and development training.

Furniture manufacturer Godfrey Syrett has appointed a new financial director to help steer the business through its ambitious growth strategy.

The firm has appointed Nick Pope to the role, who has returned to the North East after a long stint of living and working abroad.  Nick is a fully qualified chartered accountant and after graduating spent 20 years working for global firm, British American Tabacco.

600-year-old Durham School, Quarryheads Lane, Durham, has recruited Andrew Beales to the position of development director.

Dean Cowens, who has over 15 years’ experience in the IT sector, has been appointed as sales manager to oversee the sales team, driving growth and new business development.

He will be working alongside chartered accountant Celia Yeates, who joins as new finance manager together with new accounts assistants Gemma Barker and Ryan Masters.

With over 15 years’ experience in his field of expertise, Trevor joins the Cairn Group team as training and development manager, responsible for over 3,000 staff across the portfolio of 31 hotels and 30 plus bars, UK-wide.

Infrastructure Managers Limited (IML), a specialist provider of management services to the PFI and PPP markets, has boosted its plans for expansion with the appointment of a new, highly renowned Non-Executive Chairman.

The role will be taken up by Alan Campbell, a retired corporate law expert with thirty years of experience. Alan spent his entire career at commercial law firm Dundas & Wilson prior to retiring from legal practice in 2014.

Scotland’s technology entrepreneur support programme, has confirmed that Dr Steve Ewing is the new Director of Operations, leading the programme going forward following the retirement of Gordon Stuart.  Ewing has been working with the IV team since 2015, having joined Edinburgh’s School of Informatics in 2008 during which time he played an instrumental part in the bid to create a new robotics facility at the University.

Glasgow wholesaler JW Filshill is ramping up investment in its on-trade division with the appointment of Stuart Bell as business development manager for the central belt of Scotland.

Filshill, which supplies a broad range of beers, wines and spirits, has boosted its range with premium artisan craft beers and spirits produced by Craft Beer Clan members and supplies its KeyStore convenience retail customers, other specialist independents, ASDA and export markets. The company is now upweighting resource in the licensed on-trade, initially in the central belt.

The Real Estate team of Midlands and South West law firm Lodders has made its second hire in two weeks, with real estate development solicitor Daniel MacLeod joining the team from Warwickshire firm Wright Hassall.

Investec Wealth & Investment (“IW&I”) has appointed Terry Michael as an Investment Director in its Birmingham office.

Terry will join a seven-strong team and report to Gary Callow, Senior Investment Director. The Peach Pub Company, which runs The High Field gastropub and The High Field Town House in Edgbaston has appointed its first Property Director as its next step towards becoming a 22 strong, £35 million a year pub business. 

Simon Bishop takes the reins in the newly created role, with a remit to source and acquire new properties that the award-winning independent pub company can make peachy.  He will also look after property matters for Peach's 17 existing pubs and boutique hotel, The High Field Town House.

Since launching its apprenticeship programme three years ago, Leeds law firm Clarion has taken on a total of eight apprentices, including a further four this year.

Isher Sidhu, aged 17 from Leeds, and Lucy Robinson, 16 of Goole, are both undertaking Business Administration Level 2 and working in Clarion’s Risk and Regulatory team.  Eighteen year old Ethan Bradley from Castleford and Hannah Stead, 19 from Ripponden, are studying CILEx advanced apprenticeship in legal services and working in the firm’s Law Costs team.

 The new roles, based at the firm’s offices in Sheffield, Leeds and Doncaster, brings the total number of trainees appointed by the firm to 12 in the last year.

In Sheffield, Hollie Hemmens is based in the employment team while Syed Islam is working in the litigation and dispute resolution department. Electric String Ltd, of South Orbital Trading Park, Hedon Road, a leading and award-winning British audio-visual company; with expertise in luxury marine, commercial and high-end residential projects in the UK and overseas, took on Emily Halsey as Office Apprentice as part of a 12 month Intermediate Apprenticeship in Business and Administration through the Learning Skills Partnership.

Philip Veal has built an impressive CV during the last decade, having worked in Michelin star restaurants and honing his skills in a variety of establishments across the country, as well as cooking alongside MasterChef star Raymond Blanc.

Malcolm Hollis LLP, the UK’s largest independent commercial building surveying firm, has appointed Rob Devoy as Senior Chartered Building Surveyor at its Leeds office.

Devoy has a degree in building surveying from Leeds Metropolitan University and joins Malcolm Hollis from GVA, where he was a senior surveyor.
