Dad's the word for new book business

Father and daughter team Richard Warriner, and 15-year-old Nicole, have launched a new personalised publishing platform whose first book has sold in 26 countries.

Between the Lines Books is a web-to-print publishing business, creating personalised picture books aimed at young children sold over the internet, and has had financial support from the Start-up Loans programme.

Behind the Magic Door, the first book to be published  by the new business, is written by Nicole and has already been shipped to 26 countries.

This book places the child in a story with a range of characters who reveal a different letter of the child’s name – the story ends when the child completes their name. The customer adds information to personalise the story, and the hard copy of the book can be bought directly from the website. 

Future plans for the business include developing an app, building a new series of themed books, building new commercial partnerships and to launch the range in additional territories. 

These will be led by Richard who has more than 20 years experience working in retail management for household names including Sainsbury’s, Homebase, Co-op and Mouchel.

Alex Mearns, loan officer at Business Finance Solutions which is part of the Manchester Growth Company, said: “Personalised products have never been more popular and what Richard and Nicole’s business model offers is an enhanced and very authentic bespoke service.

“In an age when children can create and live adventures on screen via avatars, the continued success of the personalised book market is testament to the fact that nothing beats reading a book with young children.”

Nicole Warriner said: “Thanks to the Start Up Loan from BFS I’ve been able to go into business with my dad, the very person who first ignited my love of reading. I have loved books ever since I can remember – my passion for reading grew nearly as fast as my bookshelf - and I have been so inspired by books that I wanted to share my passion with others.

“We are already shipping to over 20 countries, with regular repeat business and glowing reviews and are now working on increasing our stable of stories and building in even more personalisation functions on the website.”
