Karan Sejpal, UBS

Meet the Manager: Karan Sejpal of UBS

As regional head of UBS in the North West and Yorkshire, Karan's biggest challenge is recruiting the right people for the world's largest wealth management business. We found out more about his role day-to-day...

Describe your role in no more than 100 words.

Aside from running the North West and Yorkshire UBS Wealth Management offices, I also help clients with their wealth management needs.

What is it the company does?

UBS is the world's largest wealth manager helping families and individuals successfully manage their wealth and achieve their longer term goals.

What do you believe makes a great leader?

I don’t think I am there yet, but the qualities that I admire in a leader are consistency of purpose, treating people like the way you would like to be treated yourself and honesty.

What has been your biggest challenge in your current position?

The challenge in any business, but more so in my industry, is to be able to recruit the right people.

How do you alleviate the stress that comes with your job?

Exercise, reading and watching boxsets.

When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a business man.

Any pet hates in the workplace?

Implementation of new processes with (apparent) lack of thought / understanding as to potential implications which might affect the client.

Where do you see the company in five years’ time?

Continuing to be the trendsetter in the industry, doubling our market share would be nice as well.

What advice would you give to an aspiring business leader?

Don’t just think about it, go out and do it. I know it sounds a bit far-fetched but it's true; one can only be limited by one's imagination. You do also require a bit of luck along the way!!

Where did you start your career?

My first job was selling car stereos and seat covers to my dad’s customers at his petrol pump. My first proper job was with Citi Group in Mumbai.

Give us a brief timeline of your career so far.

I started my career with Citigroup in Mumbai selling mortgages after which I completed an MBA at Manchester business School. I have also held positions at Credit Suisse and Barclays before my current role as Regional Head of UBS.
